Legacy Project: Expansion Restraints Solution

Commissioned in 2019, PurposeEnergy designed and delivered a multi-tank, expandable anaerobic digestion system to support Smuttynose Brewery’s operations on their 14 acre property in Hampton, New Hampshire.

The system was purpose-built to manage the brewery’s high-strength organic waste streams and integrates anaerobic digestion with ultrafiltration for discharged waste safely to the municipal sewer system while significantly reducing the facility’s environmental footprint.

  • The metaDigester™ design  (Modular Expandable Tank Array Digester) was intentionally engineered to grow alongside the brewery.
  • By decoupling production growth from wastewater constraints, the system enables increased brewing capacity without requiring costly sewer upgrades or operational compromises.

Today, the value of that forward-looking infrastructure is even more evident. Smuttynose has since joined Mass. Bay Brewing to form Barrel One Collective, a larger New England craft beer platform.
