Industrial-Scale Multi Feedstock Anaerobic Digestion Facility

The PurposeEnergy anaerobic digestion facility in Middlebury, Vermont is a cornerstone project demonstrating the long-term viability of industrial-scale, multi-feedstock anaerobic digestion.

Designed to convert a wide range of high-strength organic residuals into renewable energy, the facility serves as a foundational model for subsequent PurposeEnergy developments across the Northeast and beyond.

  • With generation capacity exceeding 1 MW, the Middlebury plant processes organic waste streams from regional food and beverage manufacturers alongside other commercial organics.
  • By aggregating these materials into a centralized, engineered system, the facility provides a reliable alternative to traditional disposal.
  • The project was developed to operate continuously and flexibly, accommodating variable feedstock compositions while maintaining its robust and reliable performance.
  • Now fully operational and performing as designed, the Middlebury facility continues to play a critical role in Vermont’s renewable energy and organics diversion strategy.
